Writing
Reading and writing touch almost every aspect of my life. Editing and proofreading are as integral to graphic communications as color, line, and shape. Poetry, short stories, essays, and songs are my spiritual sustenance. I consider writing my first and most passionate craft, one that requires daily practice.
Some recent writing assignments and accomplishments:
West Virginia Public Radio
More than 100 of my short essays have aired on West Virginia Public Radio. Two of them won national awards from Public Radio News Directors, Inc. A collection of radio essays won an Individual Artist Fellowship from the West Virginia Commission on the Arts. Click here to listen to or download my latest essay.
West Virginia Wild & Wonderful: West Virginia's official travel guide
Since 1999, I have written editorial copy for West Virginia Wild & Wonderful. The annual guide is distributed throughout the country by the WV Division of Tourism. The 2005 edition was named Best State Travel Guide in the U.S.
Davis & Elkins College
In 2007, Davis & Elkins College introduced a new group of recruitment materials. I designed the concept, "Discover & Explore" and wrote the copy for the college view book, awareness brochure, search piece, and other print materials.
Poetry, short fiction, feature, and travel writing
Redbook, the PEN Syndicated Fiction Project, The Sun, Mid-Atlantic Country, Goldenseal, and many other periodicals have published my short fiction, feature articles, reviews, and travel writing. Two short stories have been nominated for the Pushcart Prize, and a collection of short fiction won First Prize in the West Virginia Writers annual competition. My poems have been published in many periodicals, including Arts & Letters, Passager, and The Sun. In 2007, I received a three-month residency fellowship from the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation.
